Charity spotlight: Kiwanis Clubs of Springfield

Kiwanis Clubs of Springfield

The story goes that, back in the 1950s, several Springfield business leaders formed a second Kiwanis Club in order to supply kids in need with brand-new shoes.

“We’ve given out 26,000 pairs of shoes over the years,” said Jennifer York, President for the Kiwanis Clubs of Ozark Empire.

The Price Cutter Charity Championship presented by Dr Pepper, a major fundraiser for Ozarks children’s charities, is proud to have the Kiwanis Clubs of Springfield on board again this year.

The tournament has gifted almost $14 million in its 27-year history, with the tournament long given national appeal because it is part of the PGA’s Web.com Tour.

During the past school year, the Kiwanis Club of Ozark Empire volunteers personally fitted more than 1,300 pairs of new shoes at the Shoe Bank. For a child to receive a new pair of shoes, they must be qualified for the federal free or reduced food programs in public schools. The Kiwanis Club’s shoe bank is open on Thursday afternoons and one Saturday a month. The Club also has awarded $3,000 in college scholarships through its Community Foundation of the Ozarks scholarship program.

“Our shoe bank is an incredibly rewarding, hands-on service project,” York said. “It is a joy to see the sparkle in the eye and the spring in the step of a student who fell in the love with the personally-fitted new pair of tennis shoes that they got to choose for themselves.  That simple pair of tennis shoes is tangible evidence that their community cares about their education, health and well-being. Kids need Kiwanis and Kiwanis needs our community.”
