Van der Walt on top as PCCC heads to the weekend

PCCC-teeoff

South African Dawie van der Walt continued his torrid pace around Highland Springs Country Club on Friday morning. The former Lamar Cardinal fired a bogey-free 65 in the second round, posted 128 16-under-par and grabbed the 36-hole lead at the Price Cutter Charity Championship presented by Dr Pepper.

“I’m very pleased with the way I’m playing,” van der Walt said. “If I can just continue to play the way I am, I should be in good shape.”

Wes Roach birdied his final two holes on Friday, carded 66 and finds himself one back heading into the weekend.

“I kind of put myself right back in the middle of it,” said Roach of his birdie-birdie finish. “I’m looking forward to the weekend.”

In the mix, three back, are Martin Piller (64), PGA TOUR veteran Billy Mayfair (62) and Kyle Thompson (67).

Van der Walt’s strategy around Highland Springs has been conservative. The Web.com Tour veteran has put a premium on hitting fairways and greens this week. The calculated approach is paying off, as Van der Walt has been blemish-free through 36 holes.

“That’s one of my goals,” said van der Walt. “I try and make a lot of birdies, but not make any bogeys.”
