Charity Spotlight: Music Therapy of the Ozarks

To hear parents of special-needs kids tell it, Music Therapy of the Ozarks is a true difference-maker.

“If Cash didn’t have the funding, he wouldn’t be able to come every week,” one parent said. “Cash has come such a long way, it’s amazing.”

Or listen to Zoe’s mom: “This is one of Zoe’s most important hours of the week and the scholarship made that possible. We greatly appreciate the scholarship. It’s been a blessing.”

Which is why the PGA Korn Ferry Tour’s Price Cutter Charity Championship presented by Dr Pepper hopes the community supports all of its Ozarks children’s charities such as Music Therapy of the Ozarks.

Among the ways to support Music Therapy is either through its September event – Rockin’ Roll Bike & Music Fest (www.bikeandmusicfest.org) – or through the $25 TLC Properties Charity Sweepstakes, whose grand prizes include a 2020 Toyota Tundra or $10,000.

Music Therapy of the Ozarks relies on both, and for good reason. It was founded in 2014 by Julie Cassity, the Instructor and Clinical Director of Music Therapy at Springfield-based Drury University.

She saw it as a way to help special needs kids and many others, such as folks in skilled nursing homes. In fact, the charity’s mission reads: To provide the healing power of music throughout the lifespan by offering funding assistance and building community awareness.

“Our interest in being involved with the PCCC was two-fold.  First, we saw this as a fundraising opportunity for our organization,” Cassity said. “Selling raffle tickets for the truck was just one of those opportunities. It has been a great project for our team. In the last two years, we have raised over $20,000 on the raffle tickets alone!”

The PCCC also has opened the door to helping Music Therapy of the Ozarks spread its message. Look at the results: Music Therapy of the Ozarks has been honored to have provided over 2,500 music therapy encounters to the community. Scholarships and funding for programming in 2019 totaled over $34,000, much of which was raised through our partnership with the PCCC.

“Being involved with the tournament has also been a great way to increase our exposure in the community,” Cassity said. “We have had the opportunity to network and share our story with many nonprofits. Additionally, we have been blessed to meet so many people and business leaders at the golf tournament who have a passion for helping others!”
