Charity Spotlight: Boys & Girls Clubs of Springfield

Some folks in the world want to put everyone in a position to enjoy success.

That’s exactly the thinking of the Boys & Girls Club of Springfield, which has four units across the city. It’s also a reason why the PGA Korn Ferry Tour’s Price Cutter Charity Championship presented by Dr Pepper is proud to have the Club among its nearly 50 Ozarks children’s charities this year.

For 26 years, the PCCC has provided a funding stream for the Boys & Girls Club, which provides supplies and equipment for programs focusing on Academic Success, Good Character & Citizenship and Healthy Lifestyles.

With the COVID-19 pandemic, the Club has temporarily suspended its traditional operations. But it’s still making quite a difference. More on that in a second.

“The Price Cutter Charity Championship is a summer tradition for the Boys & Girls Club staff and teens,” said Jeff Long, Director of Operations at Boys & Girls Clubs of Springfield. “Not only does the PCCC provide needed funds to carry out our mission, but the volunteer experiences for our Club members provide valuable life lessons.”

The COVID-19 pandemic has led the Club to find creative ways to help the community. For instance:

  • Since March 18, BGCS is providing curbside drive-thru meal service Monday through Friday at three of its locations across Springfield. It also is delivering to families who cannot travel to one of the units.
  • In order to holistically serve families, the Club has developed and strengthened many partnerships. For example, Care to Learn provides vouchers for BGCS to distribute to families to bridge any need gaps it cannot fill on its own.
  • On March 26, BGCS launched the 12-hour COVID-19 helpline.
  • On April 6, BGCS compiled and released a comprehensive list of resources and services related to COVID-19 so families and community members could more easily access critical information.
  • BGCS staff have also been checking in with Club families via phone calls during the week of March 23. During the first two weeks of check-in calls, more than 345 families were contacted. This is an ongoing process, and BGCS expected to reach an additional 150 in the following two weeks, for a total of nearly 500 families reached. It also released a survey for parents to provide feedback about their needs.

All this for an organization whose mission states: To enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.

And its vision: To provide a world-class Club experience that assures success is within reach of every young person who enters our doors, with all members on track to graduate from high school with a plan for the future, demonstrating good character and citizenship, and living a healthy lifestyle.

The hope is life get back to normal soon. After all, in order to meet its mission’s goals, the Boys & Girls Club of Springfield offers opportunities for Club members to participate in a variety of character-building activities, such as: field trips, leadership training, education and technology, community service, special events, mentoring, and sports (including swimming, basketball, flag football, golf, tennis). These are in addition to many other opportunities, along with educational support for students on the path to college.
