They wait 1 to 2 years. Yes, it’s hard to believe, but right now and right here in the Ozarks, Little Brothers wait 1 to 2 years before getting their Big Brothers. And for Little Brothers like Charlie, that’s not easy.
You see, Charlie lives with his mother, little brother and little sister. His biological father is incarcerated for domestic violence.
And, sadly, research tells us that children such as Charlie are three times more likely to repeat the cycle of abuse in adulthood, 74 percent more likely to commit a violent crime, and six times more likely to commit suicide. That’s why Charlie’s mother wants him to have a Big Brother to show him about respect and how to treat women.
Fortunately, Big Brothers and Big Sisters of the Ozarks is making it happen for many youths in our area, and is seeking to enroll 50 Big Brothers by the end of July as part of the KY3 Big 50 Challenge, Big Sisters through its Community Based program, and Lunch Buddies at its Springfield elementary school partner.
In other words, the PGA Web.com Tour’s Price Cutter Charity Championship presented by Dr Pepper is proud to partner with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Ozarks again this year. The tournament is a tremendous sponsorship opportunity for businesses and individuals who want to rally behind a cause that has gifted almost $14 million to Ozarks children’s charities in the past 27 years.
Take Charlie, for example. He loves sports cars, playing on computers and building with Legos. He also loves pulling pranks on his brother and sister.
Charlie said, “I want to have a Big Brother to have somebody to spend time with me because my mom works a lot, so she doesn’t have a lot of time to spend with me.”
Becoming a Big Brother or Big Sister is as easy as getting a new friend to enjoy your hobbies with. For example, if you like to play golf, you’d be matched with a Little that’s interested in golf. It really is that simple.
