The importance of the PGA Web.com Tour’s Price Cutter Charity Championship presented by Dr Pepper was magnified again on Sunday, when Patrick Reed became the third PCCC alum to capture the Green Jacket at The Masters.
Reed shot a final-round 71 to earn a one-shot victory over Rickie Fowler on Sunday at Augusta National. Reed finished at 15 under, holding off charges by Fowler (67/14 under) and Jordan Spieth (64/13 under). To get there, Reed, who moved to fifth in the FedExCup standings with the victory, picked up key birdies at Nos. 12 and 14 and made pars on the final four holes, including a delicate two-putt on the 18th hole to win.
The victory was part of a great journey for Reed, who in 2011 played in the PCCC. He tied for 25th that year at Highland Springs Country Club, firing a 14-under par 274 and earning $5,125. That was the year Steve Friesen captured the PCCC.
Zach Johnson, who won the 2007 Masters, played in the PCCC in 2003. Bubba Watson, the 2012 and 2014 Masters champ, played in the PCCC in 2003, 2004 and 2005.
Chris DiMarco, who won the 1997 PCCC, finished as The Master’s runner-up in 2005. Stewart Cink, who won the PCCC in 1996, tied for third in 2008.
When he entered The Master’s this past Thursday, Reed was one of 30 Web.com Tour alums of the 87 players in the field.
This year’s PCCC is July 20-30, with the pros playing July 26-29 at Highland Springs.
