Charity Spotlight: Boys & Girls Clubs of Springfield

If you assumed that the Boys & Girls Club of Springfield wasn’t ready to burst into the summer – especially as the global pandemic appears to near an end – well, check what its officials are about to roll out.

The Boys & Girls Club of Springfield is opening the O’Reilly Unit at Williams Elementary and is launching a new workforce readiness program.

And that’s in addition to all the other incredible work it does for local youths – which is why the Club is a great fit for the PGA Korn Ferry Tour’s Price Cutter Charity Championship presented by Dr Pepper.

The tournament, set for July 16-26 in Springfield, has gifted nearly $17.4 million in its 32-year history.

Kids, teens, and their families need support now more than ever,” said Amber Alcorn, the Boys & Girls Club Marketing and Communications Assistant. “With the help of the Price Cutter Charity Championship, Boys & Girls Club will help reverse learning loss, restore a sense of safety, and continue giving kids something fun to look forward to this year.” Excited doesn’t even begin to describe the atmosphere among the club’s leadership, either. “Educational programming at the Club seeks to ensure all Club members graduate from high school on time, ready for a post-secondary education and a 21st Century career,” Alcorn said. “The Club does whatever it takes to make sure members are on the fast track to success.”

The O’Reilly Unit and the workforce readiness program are examples of the Club sticking to its mission, which is: To enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.

The PCCC has enabled the Club to thrive in numerous ways: “For 26 years, the PCCC has provided a funding stream for the Boys & Girls Club, which provides supplies and equipment for programs focusing on Academic Success, Good Character & Citizenship and Healthy Lifestyles,” said Jeff Long, Director of Operations. “PCCC’s funding allows Boys & Girls Club to provide a safe place for kids after school — a place where they can build friendships, have fun, explore new opportunities and celebrate accomplishments!”

Charity Spotlight: Dogwood Ranch

If you see Dana and Brian Lopez and the staff at Dogwood Ranch walking with a bounce in their step, there’s a good explanation.

After all, a long-term project is about to come together, after the equine therapy non-profit acquired something special.

A horse? Well, not quite.

“After a challenging 2020, we were so blessed to start 2021 off with the acquisition of a much-needed addition to our ranch property in the form of 27 acres!” said Dana Lopez, the CEO of Dogwood Ranch. “This new property, which adjoins our current property, will serve as the setting for the next phase of Dogwood Ranch, which is called The Village.

“Our goal is to build a community of foster homes in which 8-10 homes will house therapeutic level foster kids/older youth in their forever homes with highly skilled trauma informed foster parents.”

Which is one of the reasons why the non-profit is another perfect fit for the PGA Korn Ferry Tour’s Price Cutter Charity Championship presented by Dr Pepper.

Dogwood Ranch operates with this mission statement: Rebuilding generations and breaking the cycle of trauma by restoring the ONE.   “Providing long-term family for kids is one of our greatest joys and this next project will allow us the ability to do that on a much larger scale, which is so exciting for us!” Lopez said. “The PCCC and the funds raised this year will certainly be a timely investment into this next season of growth for Dogwood.”

The PCCC has positively impacted Dogwood Ranch in many ways: “The PCCC has impacted Dogwood Ranch over the years by helping to provide critical community connections and funding, which has directly underwritten multiple projects and supporting foster youth in our area,” Lopez said. This includes assistance with the building of Dogwood Ranch’s Haven homes, which house former foster youth who have been at risk of homelessness/trafficking. Past PCCC funding has also allowed Dogwood Ranch to offer equine therapy scholarships to foster youth and honor military veterans who are working to overcome trauma related challenges.

“The PCCC’s funding is a crucial part of our projected budget every year,” Lopez said. “It allows us to further our mission and vision to pursue new avenues in which to serve today’s foster youth.  Currently, this will spearhead a massive undertaking in raising funds to begin The Village at Dogwood Ranch.”
