Charity Spotlight: Shriners Hospital Dads

Talk about making a huge difference.

The Shriners Hospital Dads of Springfield-based Abou Ben Adhem Shrine Mosque have transported more than 3,100 children and their families in southwest Missouri to Shriners Children’s Hospitals.

In essence, the Shriners Hospital Dads see to it that the families don’t pay a dime as they drive them to the Shriner’s Hospital in St. Louis, or to the St. Louis airport  — and cover their airfare, food and lodging — in order reach a Shriner’s Hospital in Cincinnati or Chicago.

In 2014, the PCCC’s donation helped the Shriners purchase a new, 15-passenger seat van. The Shriners have also used their PCCC donations toward other donations for the Shriners Hospitals.

Which is why the Shriners Hospital Dads show up in force during the PCCC itself, providing transportation for golfers and caddies, other volunteers, spectators and marshals. They also sponsor hole No. 1 and the driving range. “We have been so fortunate to have this wonderful relationship with the PCCC,” said Dick Fuller of the Abou Ben Adhem mosque. “Otherwise, we would not have been able to contribute but a small fraction of the amount of money we have since starting this relationship in 2008.”
