After opening day, Chase Wright leads PCCC

PCCC-teeoff

Indiana native and Hoosiers graduate Chase Wright, 43rd on the money list of the PGA Tour’s Web.com Tour, has early bragging rights in the Price Cutter Charity Championship presented by Dr Pepper.

Wright fired a 10-under-par 62 on opening day Thursday at Highland Springs Country Club, using an afternoon round to leapfrog early leader Wes Roach, who is tied for second with Dawie Van Der Walt with a 63.

  • Kring’s day: Kevin Kring, a 2008 Missouri high school state champion who is playing on an exemption, carded a three-over-par 75 on his home course. Kring will look to capitalize on an encouraging finish in which he saved par on 18 to end his morning round. He three-putted for bogey on his opening hole but was at 1-under through 13. “It was cool to look around and see people you know,” Kring told KY3 TV sports. “When I hit bad shots, I told my caddy, ‘Well, I’ve been there before. I know what to expect.’ Kring added, “To be settled in and then make mistakes is frustrating on a score-able.”
  • Patton down the hatches: Patton Kizzire, an Auburn University grad who leads the money list with more than $391,000 this year, sits in a three-way tie for fourth with Kyle Thompson and Peter Malnati at 8-under-par 65. That’s notable because Kizzire has finished 10th in 25 events.
  • Piller of the community: Sitting in 17th is Martin Piller, who been on fire of late with a 58-under-par in his past three starts and $250,000 in winnings. He won the Boise Open in mid-July, tied for 57th at the Utah Championship and won the Kansas City event last weekend.
